A 3 day weekend coming up for some of us.:o)
Pick of the weekend will be Mon and Tues. Based on temps

By the end of the 3 day I should have 17 times out this year. With about 4 weeks + left I will get in 25 visits. Some of the lack of visits had nothing to do with conditions, but do to lipator drug side effect that sapped my energy and took out my hamstrings making my muscles weak. live some learn some.

I did order my own Ultrasound 1 mhz unit, works wonders on muscles, ligaments and tendons. My TENS, EMS unit will arrive by Friday. Similar to the EMS units in Chiro / PT offices. Seems to help my hamstrings and glutes.

Even a marginal day of skiing or riding is still fun and great exercise.

Roundtop 2/12 Troges Challenge race

Wow lots of powder today. ROundtop looked totally different. All thins and browns gone. Better surface. That being said the race course was a bit rutted and had some bumps / mounds.
Lisa and Dave Pickette was out and we all scored a medal. Nice party afterwards.

This week if you can get out Monday and Tuesday will be sweet this week. " A " rated .

Today no lines or waits.

Friday late -

Liberty heavenly 2/10

Skied from 2 to 6 today. Best trail on back was heavenly. not bumped up Whitneys was ok but had a few thins browns. It was snowing at 7 pm when I left. Police were out on 140.

Blue Streak top to bottom was great, top had powder bottom nice and flat.

We worked on aggressive pole plants, hold both pole plant. Added the side slip for edging / knee. big toe / little toes exercise. Good day for sure.

Tomorrow 1 to 2 inches of snow overnight, a squall line fast mover will add 1 inch later on Saturday. Sat night low of 16. Plenty of snowmaking. be safe window wash!! Zardog

The Cold air is everywhere but here. In europe people are freezing to death.

No lines on lifts at all. Bumped up on the back in steeps.

Did the sponge drill which taught me that with a tight stance I will not fall. Meet up with friend and did some video work. She was using blades, which require better balance.

Hi friends of snow.

I hear lots on the slopes. This year is "this is a bad year, etc"

Well lets count the blessings. Over 10 years ago during a winter with just 2 inches of snow, most of the trails were half covered. Snow making was done without computers, etc. I have the pictures and blog journal to prove it. The best way to think about life is, a bad day on the slopes is better than a good day at the office.

It all depends on how a person measures. Is it by # of days on the slope, number of days the resort is open, by best racing times, by inches of natural,etc. I have been skiing 11 times this year. Plan on getting 25 times in.

Here is a metric I use for ski racing. I chose a consistent competitor to gauge my delta (change) in spread of race times. Notice three areas where my skills increased then plateaued.

Weather is mixed. Great day today / night. Tues - Fri Spring like , loose granular. Sunday is the pick.

NO smart phone. I tested my Garmin Nuvi 255 GPS, set in bicycle mode. I reset the trip log. It did record my max speed for the run (28.3 mph) (and a flat blue) and the distance.

APP for that:
Smart phone users. Apps for Andriod and Iphone. The Iphone one looks cool. Not just speed, but slope and other data.

Nice day at liberty,

Liberty looking back from main quad. All parks open, features and jumps

Good crowd, Less than a min wait on back, less than 8 mins on front. I set my garmin nuvi to bicycle and reset the trip log. In my front pocket it could still receive the signal from sat. my max speed on lower blue streak was 28.3 MPH .

Today was a flat light day, tonight the lights will help. When I left at 3 pm it was snowing lightly. No snowmaking during the day. everything open.

Good Evening Snow fun folks, Spent the day at Roundtop. Now at 85% open terrain. No lines no waits. Snow making till about noon.

Roundtop 1/15 Sunday, Making snow on Ramrod. open Monday

I was at Roundtop, Skied 11 am to 3 pm. Steeps had some ice. rest was powder. Temp of snow on ground in shade was 7 degrees. No lines or waits on main or exhibition quad. Parking lots up front full before 9:30 am. Shuttle Buses running. Tubing was open. Big Screen on first floor and another up in the bar.

Snow making all day take goggles and face protection.

NASTAR Racing - Roundtop Monday 12 noon to 3 pm 1$(test) 6$ 2 runs, 10$ unlimited.

Friday night update.
Snow making was started at 1 pm today at all three. Plan is:
During wet snow ie, temp humidity higher they made snow on non open trails. Once the temp went down they started building base back on the trails that have been open or recently closed due to thins and browns.

Those thins and browns will be covered by am saturday. Should be able to re open the runs.
Maybe a new trail or two by Sunday afternoon. check ahead. Depends on production of snow.
Temps look good for 24 hr ops. next 2 days.

At Liberty today. 11 to 4 pm. waits on lifts no more than a minute.
Some runs were thin and were marked. Lower Blue streak is where I spent my time doing one legged outside ski drills. I skied the back and front. Felt better today with the new boots LANGE RX130.

I have dropped the rating for the thins and browns and the temps hit the snow quality.

POLICE: Nice day, weekend, State Police were working Finksburg at top of hill. 3 cars with laser.
west side of town in Taneytown. Local police in big blue SUV.

The SNow Making possible gauge is showing maintenance snow making on monday and tuesday night.Then starting friday night a nice run coming up.

UPDATE 6pm
Good cover end to end, big difference since last weekend. Backside was open. Sunshine and 50 ish made the front a bit sticky noon to 4 but after that it firmed up a bit and was faster . I did one leg drills on lower blue streak for 1.5 hrs than went to the back.

Friday morning conditions upgraded to a "B". Great snow production,Liberty has the most terrain open. Blue Streak opens today, 3 more backside trails to open Saturday. (65%).

I was at Liberty on snow from 11 am to 2 pm. I used the new infrared temp reader. the snow temp in shade was 22 degrees at 11 am . Hint stay in the shade!!

Liberty 12/31/2011 Lower Blue Streak

I went to test the new Lange RX130 boots. Edge engagement and release both faster than previous boot. Sure these are a bit tighter fitting but well worth the performance gain.

I took runs on all 3 trails that were open except sneaky pete. There were some thin areas, but my skis showed no sign of issues, like rock cuts at the end of day.

The new auto loader on the Main quad is interesting. No lines today. I also ate out on the deck. Nice day.

Awesome news....I was checking the CPC at 4 pm for the latest temp trends.

Finally looks like 14 days of below normal temps. Sweet. Just what we need. In fact the whole east coast could use the cold. Most resorts 40% open/ 20 inch base.

During December all I saw was Orange now the blue is showing up on the east coast.

Snowmaking , Tonight snowmaking started at 4pm should get 14 hrs in. Then the call will be made to open a few trails for the weekend if possible.

but then a wait till tues Jan 3 for 24 hour snowmaking operations.

Now for the not so great news. Whitetail has cancelled the News Years party. Roundtop is sold out, and Liberty is going to go. No tubing for sure. Liberty /Roundtop will try and get limited trails open for the weekend.

HELLO happy wednesday.

I keep my eye on the weather, But the temps the rest of this week will be a no go for snow making.
Possible on Sat 24th and Sunday Night 25th. One the long range I saw low temps in the high teens around Jan 1. But wait and see. Once they open I suspect limited maybe 30 - 40 % trails open as they build. The temps we are waiting for, the technology is better then 10 years ago and there is stockpiled snow on the slopes. Thank your snow making staff.

A good productive night of snow making. Tonight should be the same.

Obvious the real weather folks got December wrong completely. Not blaming them.
Weather is dependent upon many factors. In our case, La Nina, PNA,NAO, AO. Can't do the math anymore but that is a lot of combinations. Even just one of those being in our favor will help. Well the stars did not line up yet.

Now do not worry the sky is not falling.

A good analysis would include historical data. I still have my blog from 99/00
That year 99 was a dec 24 open and march 6 close. The good news is there have been 11 years improvement in snow making.

So relax and enjoy the games today, stretch etc...

What is AO ARCTIC OSCILLATION -
A circular air pattern in the Arctic Circle. When positive the pattern keeps the cold air bottled up, but some cold makes it down to Eastern US. A negative pattern allows the cold air to come down from the Arctic and prolong the cold.

What is NAO North Atlantic Oscillation -
A circular air pattern in the North Atlantic. When negative keesp the cold on the east coast and makes storms move slower and dump more snow.

PNA - The positive phase consists of above normal geopotential heights over the western U.S. and below normal geopotential heights over the eastern U.S. This correlates to ridging over the western U.S., and deep troughing over the east. The net result of the height field pattern in this phase is that it forces cold air residing in Canada to plunge southeastward, which results in below normal temperatures over the eastern U.S. and above normal temperatures over the western U.S..

Did some research looking into similar PNA, NAO, AO, LA- Nina patterns.
They previous times the NAO and AO did go negative in mid JAN.
So when will it snow ? I dunno . But it will.

We need COLD air- 20 degrees and no wind and low humidity.
That is the perfect recipe for snow making.

Snow making continued last night. Bit harder at Liberty. Temps can be weird sometimes.
Tonight is scheduled for snowmaking. Friday night will be marginal, Saturday night awesome.
I hope the mountain opens this weekend, no official word. It will be limited trails and limited base.

So why is the weather off? the NAO has been positive the whole month, along with the PNA. Weather patterns usually change every 3 to 4 weeks.

With the automated snow making and efficient snow fans, the mountain can cover the trails fairly quickly.

You could feel the wind pick up, and the temps begin to drop at 4 pm.
Snow making started Thursday evening.

Last night was a no go, but tonight looks good for production. the more snow on the ground the faster the build up.

Under 20 degrees tonight, Sunday and Monday night. Expect low dew point below 15 degrees and no wind.

Yup a bit of snow. But the real news is Snowmaking will begin Thursday night and get 10 hrs plus per day of production. Temps look good for that.

NCC Cards go out SATURDAY in Postal Mail.

So check the Satellite Snow maps of the Northern Hemisphere. You can see plenty of snow in Russia, Siberia, Canada, Alaska, But not much in Europe or east coast.

Nice day today. I know all of you want to play on the slopes.

The most dominate feature in our weather is the La Nina. It is a weak one.

The la nina will drive the jet stream. Other oscillation patterns to care about:
AO Arctic Oscillation and NAO North Atlantic Oscillation. NAO I look for it to go negative and that will bring on the cold air.
The Pic to the right is the NAO forecast. now it tis on the fringe but looks like the NAO will go negative around the 16 dec.

The AO pic right , is showing the same.

The CPC forecast for precip towards 17th december look drier, a good thing. (green / brown map) The blue orange map is the temp trends. It is 14 days out so things could change.

I find a bottle of grape juice mixed with creatine mono and glutamine 5 grams each per day helps the workout. These two ingredients are in the top 5 that actually work. your mileage may very.

WOMEN - weightlifting using 3 sets tends work better. Men 1 good set will do.

45 degree leg sled does get a bad wrap on the news. It is true support for the lower back is a must. The gym I used a curved pad that can be added. exrx.net description and muscles affected

Now your running out of time to work on your core.

The Plank and Side plank will work faster and with better results compared to sit ups.

I have my eye on the weather.

I typically look at CPC trends for temp and precip
I use 10 an 15 day outlooks from
accuweather, and a few others.

What I have seen this month was the temps were above and I am now seeing the trend to Normal and Below. The LA Nina is in zone 3.4 and 3 considered moderate.

On Sat the NASA launches a new rover to Mars.
The SAM instrument was built at NASA Goddard.

I see the temp outlooks are showing the milder trend to Normal temps. Normal temps or below means snow making possible.

In theory the mountain can open 40 to 60 % of the trails with 4 days of snow making. Keep your fingers crossed.

We need 27 degrees and low humidity and no wind. My best guess Dec 10 -17 time frame.

Sick of rain, so is the zardog. Above Normal precip for another week or so then below.

Liberty tested the snow guns yesterday. sweet!

Early bird price extended online only till NOV 25. To celebrate the Launch and success of the new NCC online sign up.

IF you are RED I need a Release Form signed form you. I will try and call and email directly.

As soon as the Mountain prints the cards, sometime right after Thanksgiving, I will have them in the mail to you. Labels are ready on my end except for the final checks of addresses.

My guess for opening is Dec 10-17. I can only see temps out to 14 days. The temps appear to dip Dec 3 to 40/20 degrees.

The new online system went well. of 61 members all but 8 used the online system. We had 4 minor error corrections all complete in less than a week. Only (2) - 4 hr or less period of downtime.

If you need binding calibration adjustments, tuning, or waxing, now is the time to drop them off at your local retail. Play it again sports, Baltimore Ski Warehouse, Ski Haus, all favorites of mine. The shops need time more than a day to turn them around. Get R Done.

ZARDOZ NOTwax samples for all members. This is a wipe on that lasts 1 to 3 days. We recommend a hot wax every 5 to 10 times out, and a wipe on as needed. In a pinch you can hard rub the hot wax on the base and buff out with a scotch brite pad.

a bit of snow coming. It should not stick to roads in the major population areas. It will cause reduced visibility, 1 to 3 inch snowfall with thunder. expect 1 -3 inch on grass. Out in the WV, MD, VA, PA mountains 6 to 10 inches and it could accumulate at higher altitudes.
